A EU petition has been launched to stop vivisection. I am not a biologist, so I will not ask you to believe what I say without question. But I just want you to know that there are alternative to vivisection, and its use is not as unavoidable as we are regularly told. Search the topic. Do not go to partisan website, of either side, search for scientific articles, published in referee journals, read the abstract, it is a little bit difficult in the beginning, but it is always possible to understand the goal and results of the work, search for who funded the research of the article (usually it is at the end of the article). And once you have searched on the subject, if you think that vivisection should be avoided, and that it is the duty of our European Parliament to take action, go to
For those of you who think that this kind of social initiative does not work, let me tell you that is not the case. Earlier that year, EU decided to ban pesticides whose actions are very heavily suspected to have a been part of the disappearance of bees. And let me tell you that the lobby of the pesticides producers tried everything possible to prevent it. But in the end, we elect our deputies, and we have been numerous enough to be heard and for them to not stay deaf.
We have to build the world we want to live in !

If I don't always reply, don't take it personnally, it's just that I can only spend a relatively short amount of time on DA, so I tend to reply to comments rather than favs and others. But I love all of you anyway. =)
Pluto rocks, or Pluto's rocks ?
For those who do not know, Pluto is not a planet, but it has satellites, which means that it is the first multiple system of small bodies that we have known. With the discovery of Nix and Hydra, it had become the first quadruple system (of small bodies) we knew, and now, with the discovery of P4 in 2011 and P5 last July, it is now the only sextuple system that we know, at least for the time being.
P4 and P5 still have provisory names and the team wants to give them names, and it seems they could not reach an agreement over which names should be chosen, so they have narrowed the selection and are asking YOU to choose it :

Science, it's a scientist thing !
I know, it is long, and its place is not really on DA, but since I do not have a blog... well it is not as if so many people read my page anyway. In fact I had written much more but I decided to cut things.
It is a strange mixture of disgust and astonishment that has befallen me when I discovered the official video clip invented by the European Commission to promote scientific careers to young women (Science, it's a girl thing). It is even hard to tell everything that irks me with this video, which is why I will not do it. But there are quite few things I want to point out.

A stamp for Pluto !!!
Dear fellow deviants,
I need your help. As a scientist and a stamp collector, I have discovered a wonderful initiative. There is a petition online, from the people responsible for New Horizons, asking the USPS (United States Postal Service) to accept their idea of doing a commemorative stamp for the arrival of the New Horizons mission in Pluto's system in 2015.
